Two identical 35 × 45 mm photos.

For a paper application, GOV.UK asks for 2 identical printed photos, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide. Crop yours here and print the 4 × 6 in sheet at any photo shop.

A UK passport photo is 45 mm high and 35 mm wide when printed. This page crops your picture to that size and lays out a print sheet. It is an unofficial tool and not part of HM Passport Office. If you apply online, read the digital rules below first: they work differently.

Printed photos: what GOV.UK asks for

  • 2 identical photos, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide.
  • Your head, from crown to chin, between 29 mm and 34 mm high.
  • A plain cream or light grey background.
  • Printed in colour on plain white photographic paper, with no border.
  • Taken in the last month, and not altered by computer software.

Digital photos for an online application

For an online application, GOV.UK asks for a colour photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB, against a plain light-coloured background, taken in the last month.

If you take the photo on your own device, GOV.UK says to include your head, shoulders and upper body and not to crop it: it will be done for you. So for an online application, upload your original photo instead of a cropped one from this tool. GOV.UK also notes that photos from a booth or shop are more likely to be approved.

How to make printed photos

  1. Take the photo against a plain cream or light grey wall in even light, with a neutral expression, mouth closed and eyes open.
  2. Add it above. Photo size is already set to 35 × 45 mm.
  3. Drag the frame so your head, crown to chin, takes up most of the height. Compare with the 29 to 34 mm rule.
  4. Download the 4 × 6 in print sheet and print it at a photo shop at actual size, then cut out 2 photos.

Don’t change the background

GOV.UK says the photo must not be altered by computer software, so this page keeps Background on Keep original. Take the picture against the right background instead of editing it afterwards.

Glasses and head coverings

GOV.UK asks you not to wear glasses unless you have to, and never tinted ones. Head coverings are only allowed for religious or medical reasons. Read the full rules on GOV.UK before you print.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.

Can it change the background to white?

Yes. Set Background to White or Light blue. It works best on a head-and-shoulders photo; some official forms still ask for an unedited photo, so check the rules.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Take or pick a photo right on your phone; nothing is uploaded.

Is this an official UK government tool?

No. Treeet is an independent, unofficial tool. HM Passport Office decides whether a photo is accepted.

Can I use this for an online UK passport application?

GOV.UK says not to crop a photo you take on your own device, because it will be cropped for you. Upload your original photo instead. This page is for printed photos.

How recent must the photo be?

GOV.UK says it must have been taken in the last month, for both printed and digital photos.
