Pick a limit, get a fit.

We find the best quality that fits under your limit, and only shrink the picture if we have to.

Compress image shrinks a photo to fit under a size limit in KB, for job, exam, bank and visa forms that reject large files. It’s free and runs in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.

How to compress a photo to a size in KB

  1. Choose a Target size in the settings panel, from Under 10 KB to Under 500 KB. Under 100 KB is the default.
  2. Choose a photo or drop it on the page. JPG, PNG, HEIC, WEBP, AVIF and BMP all work, and you can add several.
  3. Each photo is compressed right away. The list shows its size before and after.
  4. Press Save next to a photo, or Download to save them all (several come as one ZIP).
  5. Changed the target afterwards? Press Apply to all files.

How it fits your photo under the limit

The result is always a JPG. The tool starts at high quality and searches for the highest quality that still fits. Only if the file is still too big at fairly low quality does it make the picture smaller in pixels, a step at a time, and search again. That way the picture keeps as much detail as the limit allows.

  • Target size: the most the file may weigh: 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB.
  • Largest side: Shrink only if needed (the default) leaves the pixel size alone unless the limit forces it. Max 2000, 1200 or 800 px makes the picture that size first, which often gives a sharper result at small file sizes.

Choosing the right target

Pick the limit the form states, or the next one below it. If a portal says “maximum 50 KB”, choose Under 50 KB; if it says 40 KB, choose Under 30 KB. Going much lower than you need only costs quality.

As a rough guide, a passport-style headshot looks fine at 20 to 50 KB, a full phone photo needs 100 to 200 KB to stay sharp, and a photo of a document needs enough size for the text to stay readable, so check it before you submit.

Common problems and fixes

  • “Can’t get under N KB, even made very small”: the limit is too tight for this picture. Choose a higher limit, or crop away background with Crop image first.
  • The form also asks for exact pixel dimensions: use Resize image, which takes a width and height plus a file size limit.
  • The form wants a PNG: this tool always saves JPG, which is what most size-limited forms expect.
  • Transparent parts turned white: JPG has no transparency, so they are filled with white.

Tips

  • For a passport or visa photo, use Passport photo maker. It crops to the right shape and has its own file size limit.
  • For a scanned signature, Signature resizer cleans the paper away first, which makes the file much smaller.
  • Crop first. Less picture means more quality for the part that matters.
  • There are ready-made pages for common limits: Compress image to 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB and 200 KB.

Privacy

Your photo is decoded and re-encoded by your browser. It isn’t uploaded, and the new JPG doesn’t carry over camera details or location data stored in the original.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.

Will it look blurry?

Only at very small sizes like 10–20 KB. Above 50 KB photos usually look the same.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Take or pick a photo right on your phone; nothing is uploaded.

How do I reduce a photo to under 50 KB?

Set Target size to Under 50 KB and add the photo. Download the result when it’s done.

Does it change the file format?

Yes. The result is always a JPG, since JPG gives the smallest files for photos and is accepted almost everywhere.

Can I compress PNG or iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. Add PNG, HEIC, WEBP, AVIF or BMP files and you get a compressed JPG back.

Why does my compressed photo have fewer pixels?

The limit couldn’t be reached by lowering quality alone, so the picture was made smaller as well. Choose a higher limit to keep more pixels.

Does compressing remove location data?

Yes. The new JPG is created from the picture alone, so EXIF details such as GPS location aren’t copied.
