Three kinds of Urdu lettering

Nastaliq (Gulzar, Noto Nastaliq Urdu): the slanting, flowing style of Urdu books and newspapers. Beautiful, and needs more line height.
Naskh (Amiri, Lateef, Scheherazade New, Noto Naskh Arabic and others): upright and very readable, good for long text and small sizes.
Decorative (Aref Ruqaa, Katibeh, Jomhuria, Lalezar, Rakkas, Reem Kufi, El Messiri): bold or calligraphic, for headlines, logos and posts.

Why you can’t “copy” a font into WhatsApp

Text carries letters, not fonts. When you paste it into WhatsApp or Facebook, the app shows it in its own Urdu font. To share a look, download the PNG. To type in a font on your computer, install it: all of these fonts are free to download from Google Fonts or their makers.

Checked for Urdu

Many Arabic fonts lack Urdu letters such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ and ے. Each font here was checked for the full set, including ں, ھ, ہ, ۂ and ۓ and the Urdu digits, so your text never falls back to blank boxes.

Questions

Can I copy the text in a font and paste it into WhatsApp?

No app can paste text with a font attached: the other app shows it in its own font. Download the PNG instead, or install the font on your device.

Are these fonts free?

Yes. All 16 are open-source fonts under the SIL Open Font License, free for personal and commercial use.

Is Jameel Noori Nastaleeq included?

No. It isn’t published under a licence that allows sharing it, so we use free Nastaliq fonts such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu and Gulzar.

Can I add my own font?

Not yet. The list is limited to fonts we can share under an open licence.

Do the fonts load slowly?

Each font loads the first time its preview scrolls into view, usually in a second. After that it’s cached.
