What’s JFIF?
A JPEG saved with a .jfif extension, often by browsers. Some apps refuse the extension.
A .jfif file is already a JPEG image with an unusual file ending, and this tool gives it the normal .jpg ending so every app and upload form accepts it. At original size the image data is copied unchanged, so there’s no quality loss. It’s free and runs in your browser.
How to convert JFIF to JPG
- Click Choose photos or drop your .jfif files onto the page. Files ending in .jpe are accepted too.
- Each file is turned into a .jpg right away.
- Leave Size at Original size for a lossless copy, or choose a maximum size in the settings panel on the right if you also want smaller pictures. Click Apply to all files after changing it.
- Save each JPG, or Download all (.zip).
What JFIF actually is
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It’s one of the standard ways of packaging JPEG image data, and many files ending in .jpg use it inside. Either way the picture is stored as JPEG, so a .jfif file and a .jpg file are normally the same kind of file with different names.
The problem is the name. Some upload forms, websites and older programs only check the extension, see .jfif, and refuse the file.
Most people meet JFIF on Windows, when an image saved from a browser arrives with a .jfif ending instead of .jpg. That comes from a Windows setting that links the JPEG file type to the .jfif extension. Changing it back means editing the Windows registry, which many people would rather avoid. Converting or renaming the files is the simpler route.
What the settings do
- Size. Original size (the default) copies the image byte for byte into a .jpg file. Nothing is recompressed, and EXIF data such as date taken stays in the file. Max 4096, 2048 or 1080 px scales the longest side down to that limit, which means the picture is decoded and saved again as a new JPEG.
- Quality. 40 to 100%, default 90%. It is only used when resizing. At original size it has no effect, because the original data is copied as is.
Renaming vs converting
For a single file, renaming photo.jfif to photo.jpg in File Explorer or Finder does the same job as the default setting here. You may need to turn on file name extensions in File Explorer first so you can see and edit the ending.
The converter is quicker for a batch, and it checks the file. If the first bytes show that a file isn’t really JPEG data, it’s decoded and saved as a proper JPEG instead of just being renamed, so you don’t end up with a .jpg that won’t open.
Common problems and fixes
- An app still refuses the JPG. The image may be too large in pixels or megabytes for that site. Choose Max 2048 px or Max 1080 px to make it smaller.
- A file shows an error. It may be damaged, or not an image at all. Try opening it in a photo viewer first.
- You need PNG instead. Convert to JPG here, then use JPG to PNG.

Questions
Are my files uploaded?
Never. JFIF to JPG conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.
Can I convert many at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.
Is there a size limit?
Only your device’s memory. Large photos convert in a second or two.
Is JFIF the same as JPG?
Yes, in practice. A .jfif file holds JPEG image data; only the file name ending is different.
Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?
Usually, yes, and the result is identical to this tool at original size. The converter is handy for many files at once and checks each file is really a JPEG.
Why does my PC save pictures as .jfif?
A Windows setting links the JPEG file type to the .jfif extension, and browsers follow it. Converting or renaming the files avoids editing the registry.
Does converting JFIF to JPG keep EXIF data?
At original size, yes, because the file is copied unchanged. Resizing creates a new JPEG without the metadata.
What is a .jpe file?
Another old ending for JPEG images. This tool accepts .jpe files and gives them a .jpg ending the same way.
