Convert Roman Urdu, Urdu written in English letters as in most chats, into proper Urdu script. Type or paste text such as “aap kaise hain” and get “آپ کیسے ہیں” as you type. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Each word is first checked against a hand-made list of about 300 common chat words, including short forms such as hy, nhi, kia and mein.
  2. If it isn’t there, it is looked up in a 97,000-word Urdu dictionary (the Urdu Roman Dictionary, MIT licence).
  3. Words in neither are spelled out from their letters with Urdu spelling rules.
  4. Words with more than one possible Urdu spelling are underlined. Tap one to switch to the next option.

Getting the best result

  • Use common spellings: “kya” rather than “qya”, “nahi” rather than “nhee”.
  • Write long vowels twice when a word comes out wrong: “aa”, “ee”, “oo”.
  • Punctuation is converted too: . becomes ۔, ? becomes ؟ and , becomes ،.
  • Names and English words are spelled out phonetically; check them before you share the text.

Questions

How accurate is it?

Common words come out right. Rare words and names are spelled out letter by letter and may need a fix: tap them for other spellings, or edit the text after copying.

Does it understand “hy”, “nhi” and “kia”?

Yes. Common chat spellings such as hy, nhi, kia and mein are in the built-in word list.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser.

Can it translate English to Urdu?

No. It changes the letters, not the language: Roman Urdu becomes Urdu script. For English sentences, use a translation tool.

Why is one word wrong?

Roman Urdu has no fixed spelling, so some words are guessed. Tap the word for other spellings, or edit it after copying.
