EPUBReflowing ebook

PDF to EPUB turns a text-based PDF into a reflowable ebook that adjusts to any screen, with chapters, a table of contents and a cover. It’s free and runs in your browser, so your PDF is never uploaded.

How to convert PDF to EPUB

  1. Choose how to make chapters and whether to include pictures and a cover in the settings panel.
  2. Choose your PDF or drop it on the page. Conversion starts right away.
  3. Press Save or Download to get the .epub file.
  4. Open it in your ebook app or send it to your reader. Changed a setting? Press Apply to all files.

How the conversion works

A PDF fixes every line in place, while an EPUB lets text flow to fit the screen. The tool reads the text on each page and rebuilds it as flowing text.

  • Lines are joined into paragraphs, and hyphenated line breaks are mended.
  • Larger text becomes headings; bold and italic are kept.
  • Running headers, footers and lone page numbers that repeat on every page are left out.
  • Pictures are cut out of the pages and placed near where they appeared.
  • The result is an EPUB 3 file with a table of contents that older readers can use too.

What the settings do

  • Chapters: From headings starts a new chapter at each main heading. If the PDF has no clear headings, longer files are split into 10-page sections and short ones stay as one chapter. One per page makes a chapter for each PDF page. One long chapter keeps everything together.
  • Include pictures: on by default. Turn it off for a smaller, text-only book.
  • First page as cover: uses an image of page 1 as the book cover. On by default.

What converts well and what doesn’t

  • Works well: novels, reports, articles and other PDFs made from a word processor, with one column of text.
  • Doesn’t work: scanned PDFs. They hold pictures of text, not text, and there’s no text recognition (OCR) here, so you’ll see a message saying so.
  • Comes out rough: tables, footnotes, equations, multi-column magazine layouts and forms. Expect them to be flattened into ordinary paragraphs.
  • Password-protected PDFs need the password removed first, with Unlock PDF.
  • Open the result in your reader and skim a few chapters before deleting the PDF, especially for long or complex documents.

Reading your EPUB

EPUB opens in Apple Books, Kobo readers, Google Play Books and most ebook apps. Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB files too. For older Kindles that need MOBI, use PDF to MOBI.

On a reader you can change the font size, typeface and line spacing, which a PDF never allows. That’s the main reason to convert: a PDF made for A4 or Letter paper is tiring to read on a 6-inch screen, while an EPUB fits it.

Privacy

The PDF is read and the EPUB is built in your browser, so manuscripts, course notes and private documents stay on your device.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

Never. PDF to EPUB conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Can I convert many at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.

Do DRM-protected books work?

No. Only DRM-free files can be converted.

Will the EPUB look exactly like my PDF?

No. An EPUB reflows text to fit the screen, so the page layout changes. Text, headings, emphasis and pictures carry over.

Why does it say my PDF has no selectable text?

The PDF is a scan or photos of pages. Without text recognition there’s no text to turn into an ebook.

Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?

Yes. Send it to your Kindle with Amazon’s Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB. For older devices, use PDF to MOBI.

How are chapters created?

By default from the PDF’s main headings, which also fill the table of contents. You can choose one chapter per page or a single chapter instead.

Why are some pictures missing or cropped?

Pictures are cut from the page where the PDF draws them. Charts built from lines and text, rather than images, may come out as text or be left out.

Can I edit the EPUB afterwards?

Yes. It’s a standard EPUB, so ebook editors such as Calibre or Sigil can open and change it.
