1,234.50 → mil doscientos treinta y cuatro.

Choose the currency and how to write the cents. The words follow the Real Academia Española rules, including “veintiún mil” and “un millón de pesos”.

Write any amount in Spanish words, the way cheques, invoices (facturas), receipts and contracts need it: “MIL DOSCIENTOS TREINTA Y CUATRO PESOS 50/100 M.N.” or “mil doscientos treinta y cuatro euros con cincuenta céntimos”. The words follow the Real Academia Española rules and are worked out in your browser.

Two ways to write the cents

  • As a fraction (50/100): the style of Mexican cheques and CFDI invoices. With Mexican pesos the text ends in M.N. (moneda nacional).
  • In words: “con cincuenta centavos” or “con cincuenta céntimos”, common in Spain and on contracts.
  • Chilean pesos have no cents, so only the whole amount is written.

Rules the tool follows

  • 21 to 29 are single words: veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés…
  • Before a masculine noun or “mil”, uno becomes un: un peso, veintiún mil, treinta y un mil.
  • 100 is “cien”; 101 to 199 use “ciento”: ciento uno, ciento cincuenta.
  • Round millions take “de”: un millón de pesos, dos millones de euros.
  • A billion in Spanish (mil millones) is 10⁹; a billón is 10¹².

Typing the amount

Type the number with a dot or a comma for the decimals: 1234.50, 1.234,50 and 1,234.50 all work. A single separator followed by exactly three digits (1.234) is read as thousands. Choose “Sin moneda” to write a plain number, for example for a contract clause.

Before you write the cheque

Copy the words exactly and check them against the figure. Banks compare the amount in figures with the amount in words, and many reject cheques where they differ. Capital letters are the usual style on cheques because they’re harder to alter.
