What’s PDF?

A fixed-layout document that looks the same everywhere, but is hard to edit.

Pull the tables out of a PDF and save them as a CSV file that any spreadsheet, database or script can read. The PDF is processed in your browser, not on a server, and the tool is free with no account.

How to convert a PDF to CSV

  1. Click Choose files, or drop one or more PDFs onto the page.
  2. Each PDF converts as soon as it’s added. You’ll see progress in the file list.
  3. Pick a Separator in the settings panel on the right, and decide whether amounts should be cleaned up into plain numbers. If you change a setting afterwards, click Apply to all files.
  4. Click Save for one CSV, or Download all (.zip) for the whole batch.

What you get

One CSV per PDF. Every page is read in order and its rows are written one after another into the same file. Each line of text on a page becomes a row, and columns are worked out from the empty vertical gaps between pieces of text. Every row is padded to the same number of fields, so the file loads as a clean rectangle.

Everything on the page is included, not just the table. Page titles, footers and page numbers usually show up as rows with text in the first column only. Delete them after import, or filter them out in your script.

Fields that contain the separator, a quote mark or a line break are wrapped in double quotes, following normal CSV rules. If the text contains any accented or non-English characters, the file starts with a UTF-8 byte order mark so Excel picks the right encoding.

What the settings do

  • Separator. Comma (,) is the default and what most programs expect. Semicolon (;) suits Excel in countries where the comma is the decimal mark, such as much of Europe. Tab produces tab-separated values, handy for pasting into a sheet or feeding into command-line tools.
  • Turn numbers into numbers. On by default. Amounts are rewritten as plain numbers: 1,234.50 becomes 1234.5, (12.00) becomes -12, and 12% becomes 0.12. Currency signs, CR and DR markers and trailing minus signs are understood. Codes with leading zeros and account numbers of 12 or more digits are left alone. Turn this off to keep every cell exactly as printed.
  • Join wrapped cell text. On by default. A description that wraps onto a second line in the PDF is joined back into one cell instead of becoming a near-empty row of its own.

Opening the CSV in Excel

If Excel shows everything in column A, the separator in the file doesn’t match what your copy of Excel expects. Either convert again with Semicolon, or open Excel first and use Data › From Text/CSV, which lets you choose the delimiter.

Excel also likes to turn long numbers into scientific notation and strip leading zeros when it opens a CSV directly. Importing through Data › From Text/CSV and setting those columns to Text avoids that. Google Sheets and LibreOffice ask about delimiters when you import.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file is empty, or you’re told there is no selectable text. The PDF is a scan. This tool has no OCR, so make the PDF searchable with an OCR program first.
  • Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened. Remove the password and try again.
  • Two columns landed in one field. A heading or long cell bridged the gap between them on that page. Split them after import with Text to Columns or a quick formula.
  • Rotated or vertical text is missing. Only horizontal text is read.

CSV or Excel?

Pick CSV when the data is going into another program: a database import, an accounting tool, Python or R. It’s plain text, it’s easy to inspect, and it has no sheets or formatting. Pick PDF to Excel when a person will work with the result, especially if you want each page on its own tab. For bank statements, Bank statement to CSV understands dates, debits and credits and gives you cleaner transaction rows.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

Never. PDF to CSV conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Not yet. It needs a PDF with real text, not photos of pages.

Can I convert many at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.

Is there a size limit?

Only your device’s memory. Long documents take a little longer.

Why does Excel put everything in one column?

The separator doesn’t match your Excel settings. Convert again with Semicolon, or import the file through Data › From Text/CSV and pick the delimiter.

Do I get one CSV per page?

No, one CSV per PDF with all pages in order. If you need pages kept apart, use PDF to Excel with One sheet per page.

Will accents and non-English characters come out right?

Yes. The file is UTF-8, and a byte order mark is added when it contains non-ASCII text so Excel reads it correctly.

What happens to commas inside a cell?

That field is wrapped in double quotes, which every CSV reader understands. Quote marks inside a field are doubled.

Can I use the CSV with Python or a database?

Yes. It’s standard CSV with a header row only if the PDF had one, so check the first rows before importing.
