Which tool for which job

  • Urdu typing: type Urdu letters with an ordinary keyboard. b gives ب, k gives ک, and Shift gives the extra letters such as ٹ, ڈ and ڑ.
  • Roman Urdu to Urdu: paste what you typed in English letters (aap kaise hain) and get Urdu script (آپ کیسے ہیں).
  • Urdu to Roman Urdu: the other way, for people who read Urdu better in English letters.
  • Urdu calligraphy generator: a name, verse or greeting in Nastaliq or calligraphy fonts, saved as a transparent PNG.
  • Urdu text to image: poetry or a quote on a background, sized for WhatsApp status, Instagram or Facebook.
  • Urdu font generator: the same text in 16 fonts side by side, to pick the right one.
  • InPage to Unicode: text out of old .inp files, ready to paste into Word, WhatsApp or a website.

About the fonts

The tools use 16 free fonts under the SIL Open Font License, including Noto Nastaliq Urdu and Gulzar for Nastaliq, Amiri, Lateef and Scheherazade New for Naskh, and Aref Ruqaa, Katibeh and Lalezar for headlines. Each was checked for the Urdu letters ٹ ڈ ڑ ں ھ ہ ے and the Urdu digits.

Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, popular in Pakistan, isn’t included because it isn’t published under a licence that allows sharing it.

Roman Urdu has no single spelling

People write the same word as hai, hy or he, and Urdu script usually leaves short vowels out, so converting between the two is never perfect. The converters use a list of common chat words and a 97,000-word dictionary, mark words that have other spellings, and let you tap to switch. Check names and rare words before you share the text.

Questions

Do I need to install Urdu fonts?

No. The tools load free Urdu fonts in the page, so Nastaliq shows correctly even on phones and computers without them.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Typing, converting and drawing all happen in your browser.

Can I use the calligraphy pictures commercially?

Yes. Pictures made with fonts under the SIL Open Font License can be used in any project.

Which InPage versions work?

We tested a file from an older InPage version, and it converted cleanly. Newer InPage 3 files are read by the same library, but we haven’t been able to test one yet, so check the text afterwards.
