Convert Urdu script into Roman Urdu, Urdu in English letters, the way people write in chats and captions. Paste Urdu text and get Roman Urdu right away. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How it works
- Common words use a hand-made list of everyday spellings, such as hai, nahi, kya and mein.
- Other words are looked up in a 97,000-word Urdu dictionary (the Urdu Roman Dictionary, MIT licence).
- Words in neither list are spelled out from their letters. Because Urdu doesn’t write most short vowels, these can miss vowels.
- Underlined words have another spelling: tap to switch.
Before converting
- Paste real Urdu text. Text copied from some old PDFs uses Arabic “presentation forms” and may not convert well; retype or copy it from a better source.
- Arabic letters typed by mistake, such as ي and ك, are changed to their Urdu forms ی and ک automatically.
- Urdu punctuation and digits become ordinary ones: ۔ becomes a full stop, ۱۲ becomes 12.

Questions
Why do some words look odd?
Urdu usually leaves short vowels unwritten, so a word missing from the dictionary is spelled out from its letters and may lack vowels. Tap it for another option or fix it by hand.
Is there one correct Roman Urdu?
No. People spell Roman Urdu in many ways (hai, hy, he). We use the most common spelling for each word.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
Which spelling style does it use?
Everyday chat spelling, such as hai, nahi, kya and bohat, not an academic transliteration with accents.
Can it translate Urdu to English?
No. It writes the same Urdu words in English letters. Use a translation tool to change the language.
