What’s InPage?

A document from InPage, the Urdu page-making program. Older versions store text in their own character codes.

URDUUrdu script

Convert an InPage (.inp) file to Unicode Urdu text you can paste into Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, Facebook or a website. Older InPage versions store Urdu in their own character codes, which look like gibberish anywhere else; this tool reads the file and writes standard Urdu. It runs in your browser, so your documents stay on your device.

How to use it

  1. Add one or more .inp files.
  2. Each file is read on your device and turned into a UTF-8 text file (.txt) with the same name.
  3. Open the .txt in Notepad, Word or Google Docs, or copy the text from it, and set an Urdu font such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu or Jameel Noori Nastaleeq if you have it.

What comes across

  • All the Urdu text, paragraph by paragraph, in order.
  • Urdu punctuation and digits, written as the Unicode Urdu characters (۔ ، ؟ ۱۲۳).
  • Formatting does not come across: fonts, sizes, colours, columns, pictures and page layout are InPage’s own, and plain text has none. Use the text to rebuild the layout in your new program.

Which InPage versions work

We tested a file from an older InPage version and the text matched the original. Newer InPage 3 files store text differently and are read by the same open-source library (inpage-format, MIT), but we haven’t been able to test one yet, so read the result before you rely on it.

If a file is damaged or not really an InPage document, you get a message instead of a text file.

Copied text from InPage looks like gibberish

Text copied out of older InPage versions and pasted elsewhere often shows up as random Latin letters and symbols, because it uses InPage’s own codes. Save the document as .inp and convert the file here instead.
