What’s HEIC?
The photo format iPhones save by default. Small files, but many apps and websites can’t open it.
Convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG so they open on Windows, Android, older software and any website upload form. Drop in one photo or a few hundred: everything is converted in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and it’s free.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Get the photos onto your computer or phone, for example by AirDrop, a USB cable, iCloud Photos or a shared folder.
- Click Choose photos, or drag the .heic or .heif files onto the page. You can keep adding more while earlier ones convert.
- Each photo converts right away with Quality at 90% and the original size. Change Quality or Size in the panel on the right, then click Apply to all files to redo the batch.
- Click Save on a photo, or Download all (.zip) to get every JPG at once. Each file keeps its name with a .jpg ending.
What the settings do
- Quality. 40 to 100%, default 90%. Higher keeps more fine detail and makes bigger files. Around 80% is usually hard to tell apart from the original on a screen and noticeably smaller. Use 100% if you plan to edit the photo further.
- Size. Original size, or a maximum of 4096, 2048 or 1080 px on the longest side. The photo is scaled down proportionally and is never enlarged. 2048 px is plenty for email and most websites; 1080 px suits social media and chat apps.
Why your iPhone takes HEIC photos
HEIC is Apple’s name for photos stored in HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) and compressed with HEVC, the same codec as H.265 video. iPhones have used it by default since iOS 11 because it keeps similar quality in noticeably smaller files than JPEG.
The trouble is support. Macs, iPhones and iPads open HEIC without fuss, but many Windows PCs need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store, and plenty of websites, print shops and older apps reject it outright. JPG has none of those problems.
To have the camera save JPG from now on, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. If you copy photos to a PC over a cable, Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC › Automatic lets the iPhone convert them as they transfer.
HEIC vs JPG
HEIC wins on file size and supports features such as 10-bit color and depth data. JPG wins on compatibility: it opens on every device and app made in the last few decades. Keep the HEIC originals if storage isn’t a problem, and make JPG copies for sharing, uploading and printing.
Converting decodes the HEIC and compresses the picture again as JPEG. At the default 90% you are unlikely to see a difference, but the JPG will usually be larger than the HEIC it came from.
What happens to photo details
The JPG contains the picture only. EXIF metadata such as the date taken, GPS location and camera model is not copied across. That is handy when you’re posting photos publicly, but it means photo apps may sort the JPGs by file date instead of capture date. Keep the originals if you need that information.
A Live Photo is a still HEIC plus a separate short video file. This tool converts the still. For the video part, use MOV to MP4.
Common problems and fixes
- A file won’t convert. It may be damaged or use a HEIF variant this converter can’t read. Try opening and re-saving it in the Photos app first.
- A .heic file that is really a JPEG inside. Some apps save JPEGs with the wrong extension. The tool detects this and converts it anyway.
- The browser slows down with a huge batch. Every photo is processed in your device’s memory. Convert a few hundred at a time on a computer, or fewer on a phone.

Questions
Are my files uploaded?
Never. HEIC to JPG conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.
How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?
Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG.
Can I convert many at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.
Is there a size limit?
Only your device’s memory. Large photos convert in a second or two.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG compresses the picture again, so a tiny amount of detail is lost. At the default 90% it’s very hard to spot; set Quality to 100% if you want the most detail.
Will the JPG keep the date and location of the photo?
No. EXIF details such as date taken, GPS position and camera model aren’t copied, so keep your originals if you need them.
Can I convert HEIC on Windows without installing anything?
Yes. The converter runs in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, with no codec packs or extensions needed.
Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC file?
HEVC compression is more efficient than JPEG. Lower the Quality or choose Max 2048 px if you need smaller files.
What about Live Photos?
The still image converts to JPG here. The moving part is a separate video file, which MOV to MP4 can convert.
