12.345.678 → 5.

The dígito verificador is worked out with module 11: the digits are multiplied by 2 to 7 from the right, and the remainder gives a digit from 0 to 9 or K.

Calculate the dígito verificador of a Chilean RUT or RUN, or check that a full RUT is valid. The check digit uses the module 11 method, so it catches most typing mistakes. Everything runs in your browser; the tool doesn’t look up names or companies.

How module 11 works

  1. Take the RUT digits without the check digit, for example 12345678.
  2. Multiply them from right to left by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, then 2, 3… again, and add the results.
  3. Divide the sum by 11 and subtract the remainder from 11.
  4. A result of 11 means the digit is 0; 10 means the digit is K; otherwise the result is the digit. 12345678 gives 5, so the RUT is 12.345.678-5.

Typing the RUT

  • With or without dots: 12.345.678 and 12345678 both work.
  • To check a full RUT, include the digit after a dash: 12.345.678-5 or 12345678-K.
  • The result is formatted with dots and a dash, ready to copy into a form.

Questions

Why is my check digit a K?

When module 11 gives 10, the digit is written as K. When it gives 11, the digit is 0.

Does this show whose RUT it is?

No. It only checks the digit. It doesn’t look up names or companies.

Is my RUT sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser.

Is the RUN the same as the RUT?

For people, yes: the RUN on the identity card is used as the RUT, with the same check digit.

Can a RUT be valid but not exist?

Yes. A correct check digit only means the number is well formed, not that it was issued.
