Bigger than most passports.
Canada asks for 2 identical printed photos, 50 mm wide by 70 mm high. Crop yours here and print the 4 × 6 in sheet at a photo shop.
A Canadian passport photo is 50 mm wide and 70 mm high (2 × 2¾ inches), larger than the 35 × 45 mm used by many countries. This page crops your picture to that size and lays out a print sheet. It is an unofficial tool and not part of the Government of Canada.
Printed photos: what Canada asks for
- 2 identical photos, 50 mm wide by 70 mm high.
- Your face, from chin to crown, between 31 mm and 36 mm.
- A plain white or light-coloured background.
- Taken no more than 6 months before you apply.
- On the back, the date and the studio’s name and address, which the photo studio writes or stamps. Your guarantor signs one photo.
How to make the photo
- Take the picture against a plain white or light wall in even light, looking straight at the camera.
- Add it above. Photo size is already set to 50 × 70 mm.
- Drag the frame so your face, chin to crown, fills about half the height. Compare with the 31 to 36 mm rule.
- Download the 4 × 6 in print sheet and print it at actual size.
You still need a photo studio
Canada asks for the studio’s name and address and the date on the back of the photos. A home print can’t have that, so take this page’s print sheet to a photo studio that can stamp it, or have the studio take the photos. Check the full rules on Canada.ca first.
Digital photos for online renewal
For online renewal, Canada.ca asks for a JPG or JPEG photo in a 3:2 portrait ratio, at least 1,800 pixels high by 1,200 pixels wide (no larger than 4,500 × 3,000), between 200 KB and 5 MB.
This page saves 50 × 70 mm at 300 DPI, which is smaller than that, so don’t use it for online renewal. Use the original photo from your camera and follow the Canada.ca digital rules.
Glasses
Glasses are allowed if your eyes are clearly visible with no glare. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are refused.

Questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
Can it change the background to white?
Yes. Set Background to White or Light blue. It works best on a head-and-shoulders photo; some official forms still ask for an unedited photo, so check the rules.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Take or pick a photo right on your phone; nothing is uploaded.
Is this an official Canadian government tool?
No. Treeet is an independent, unofficial tool. Passport Program officers decide whether a photo is accepted.
Is 50 × 70 mm the same as 2 × 2 inches?
No. It is 2 inches wide by 2¾ inches high. The 2 × 2 inch size is used for US passports.
Can I print the photos at home?
The photos need the studio’s name and address and the date on the back, so a photo studio has to be involved. Print this sheet there or let them take the photo.
