Count the tokens in a prompt or document for OpenAI models before you send it. Paste text and the counter shows tokens, characters and words as you type, and can show how the text is split into tokens. It uses OpenAI’s published tokenizers and runs entirely in your browser.

Which model family to pick

  • o200k_base: GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1, the o-series reasoning models and GPT-5.
  • cl100k_base: GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-3.5 Turbo and the text-embedding-3 models.

Why tokens matter

API prices and context limits are counted in tokens, not words. In English a token is about four characters, or three quarters of a word. Other languages such as Urdu and Hindi often need more tokens for the same meaning, so counting before you send helps with cost and limits.

What the count includes

The count is for the text you paste. A chat API request adds a few tokens per message for roles and formatting, and images and tools are counted separately, so the total on your bill can be slightly higher.

Other AI models

Claude, Gemini and Llama use their own tokenizers. Anthropic doesn’t publish a tokenizer for current Claude models and counts tokens through its API, so this page doesn’t estimate them.

Is it exact?

It uses OpenAI’s published tokenizers, so the token count of your text matches. A chat request adds a few tokens for message formatting on top.

Does it count Claude or Gemini tokens?

No. Other companies use their own tokenizers, and Anthropic doesn’t publish one for current Claude models, so counts for them would only be guesses.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting runs in your browser.

How many words is 1,000 tokens?

For English, roughly 750 words. Code, numbers and other languages vary.
