What’s PNG?

A lossless image format with transparency. Great for screenshots, logos and graphics.

Trace a PNG into an SVG made of filled vector shapes, so logos, icons and flat artwork can be scaled up without pixels showing. You choose how much detail and how many colors to keep, and the tracing runs in your browser for free.

How to convert PNG to SVG

  1. Click Choose photos or drop .png files onto the page.
  2. Tracing starts right away with Balanced detail and 16 colors. A progress figure shows as each color layer is traced.
  3. Adjust Detail and Colours in the settings panel on the right, then click Apply to all files to trace again. It usually takes a couple of tries to find the right mix.
  4. Save each SVG, or Download all (.zip).

How tracing works

A PNG is a grid of pixels; an SVG describes shapes. Tracing first reduces the image to a small palette of colors, then draws the outline of every area of each color as a path. Each color becomes a layer of filled shapes, and a hairline outline in the same color hides thin gaps between layers.

The result is a new drawing based on your image, not the original vector file. Clean, flat artwork with clear edges traces well. Photos, gradients, soft shadows and noisy scans turn into large numbers of small blobs.

Fully transparent areas of the PNG are skipped, so a logo on a transparent background stays on a transparent background. The SVG has the same width and height as the original PNG.

What the settings do

  • Detail. Simple shapes reduces the image to at most 512 px on the longest side before tracing, smooths lines more and drops small specks. Balanced (the default) traces at up to 1024 px. Fine detail traces at up to 1600 px, follows curves more closely and keeps tiny features, which makes bigger files.
  • Colours. 2 to 64, default 16. This is the size of the palette the image is reduced to. Use 2 for a black-and-white logo or line art, 4 to 8 for most flat logos, and more only when the artwork really has many distinct colors.

Tips for a cleaner trace

  • Start from the largest, sharpest version of the image you have. Blurry edges trace as wobbly ones.
  • Set Colours to the number of colors the artwork actually uses, plus one or two for anti-aliased edges. Too many colors creates thin slivers along every edge.
  • Remove backgrounds, watermarks and stray marks before tracing. A solid or transparent background gives the cleanest result.
  • If small text comes out lumpy, try Fine detail. If the file is too heavy, try Simple shapes with fewer colors.
  • Open the SVG in Inkscape, Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer to delete stray shapes or merge layers.

Common problems and fixes

  • The SVG file is large and slow to open. The image has too many colors or too much texture. Lower Colours and choose Simple shapes.
  • Edges look blocky or jagged. Use Fine detail, or start from a bigger PNG.
  • Colors are slightly off. Similar shades are merged into one palette color. Raise Colours a little.
  • Your file is a JPG. This tool accepts PNG only. Convert it with JPG to PNG first; JPEG artifacts may add noise to the trace.

Privacy

Tracing is done by a JavaScript library in your browser, one color layer at a time, so unreleased logos and client artwork never leave your device.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

Never. PNG to SVG conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Will a photo look good as SVG?

Logos, icons and flat art trace well. Photos turn into many shapes and big files.

Can I convert many at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.

Is there a size limit?

Only your device’s memory. Large photos convert in a second or two.

Is the SVG editable?

Yes. It’s made of ordinary filled paths that you can recolor, move or delete in any vector editor.

Will the SVG stay sharp at any size?

The edges will, because they’re vector paths. Detail smaller than the tracing resolution (512 to 1600 px, depending on Detail) isn’t captured.

Does it keep a transparent background?

Yes. Fully transparent parts of the PNG are left empty in the SVG.

Can I use the result with a cutting machine?

Often, yes. For cutting, trace with 2 colors and Simple shapes, then clean up stray pieces in your design software.

Does it recognize text as text?

No. Letters are traced as shapes like everything else, so they can’t be edited as text afterwards.
