What’s PNG?

A lossless image format with transparency. Great for screenshots, logos and graphics.

Turn a PNG into an ICO icon file with several sizes inside, ready to use as a website favicon or a Windows icon. Transparency is kept, the file is built in your browser, and it’s free.

How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Start with a square PNG, ideally 256 by 256 pixels or larger, with a transparent background if you want one.
  2. Click Choose photos or drop the PNG onto the page. It converts immediately using the favicon sizes.
  3. To include more sizes, change Icon sizes in the settings panel on the right and click Apply to all files.
  4. Click Save to download the .ico file, or Download all (.zip) if you made several icons.

What the Icon sizes setting does

  • Favicon (16, 32, 48). The default. Covers browser tabs, bookmarks and the Windows taskbar shortcut for a site. This is what most websites need in favicon.ico.
  • All sizes. 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px in one file. Use it for a Windows program or shortcut icon, where Explorer picks larger sizes for big icon views.
  • 256 only. A single 256 by 256 image, for tools that ask for one large icon.

How each size is made

Each size is scaled down from your PNG in several halving steps instead of one big jump, which keeps small icons cleaner. Every size is stored inside the ICO as a compressed PNG image. Modern browsers and Windows Vista and later read that kind of ICO file.

A non-square image is fitted inside the square and centered, with transparent space added on the short sides. Nothing is cropped.

Sizes larger than your PNG are skipped so a small image isn’t blown up into blurry large icons. A 48 px PNG with All sizes selected gives you 16, 32 and 48. If the PNG is smaller than every size you chose, you get only the smallest of those sizes, scaled up.

Using the file as a favicon

Rename the file to favicon.ico and put it in the root folder of your site, so it’s reachable at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Browsers look for that address automatically. You can also point to it from the head of your pages with a link element whose rel attribute is icon.

Many sites also add a 180 by 180 PNG as an apple-touch-icon for iPhone and iPad home screens, plus larger PNG or SVG icons. ICO stays useful for the 16 and 32 px sizes and for older software that only looks for favicon.ico.

Tips for a sharp icon

  • Simplify the design for small sizes. Text and thin lines disappear at 16 px; a single bold letter or shape reads better.
  • Leave a little padding around the artwork, but not so much that it looks tiny in a browser tab.
  • Check how the icon looks in both light and dark browser themes. A transparent background with a dark logo can vanish on a dark tab bar.
  • Your new favicon may not show at first because browsers cache icons heavily. Open the favicon.ico address directly, or try a private window.

Privacy

The PNG is resized and packed into the ICO by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so work-in-progress branding stays on your machine.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

Never. PNG to ICO conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Which sizes go in the icon?

16, 32 and 48 px by default, which covers browsers and Windows. You can add up to 256 px.

Can I convert many at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.

Is there a size limit?

Only your device’s memory. Large photos convert in a second or two.

What size should my PNG be for a favicon?

Square and at least 48 by 48 px for the default favicon sizes. For All sizes, use 256 by 256 px or larger.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, alpha channel included.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

Browsers still request /favicon.ico by default, so it’s worth having one alongside any PNG or SVG icons you link.

Can I make a Windows desktop icon with this?

Yes. Choose All sizes so the file includes 256 px for large icon views.

Can I convert a JPG to ICO?

This tool accepts PNG only. Convert the JPG with JPG to PNG first; note that JPG has no transparency.
